Rwanda newspapers and online media
Rwandan newspapers and Kigali news sites

The Rwandan press is read in Kinyarwanda, English and sometimes French: The New Times leads English-language print, IGIHE, Kigali Today and Umuseke draw Kinyarwanda readers, and the public broadcaster RBA rounds out a largely free online offer.

From Kinyamateka to digital news

The country's oldest title, Kinyamateka, is a Catholic newspaper founded in 1933. After independence in 1962, the press long remained under state control, before multiparty politics opened things up in the early 1990s, a period marked by highly polarised titles.

The role of the media in the 1994 genocide

Radio-Télévision Libre des Mille Collines and the newspaper Kangura broadcast calls to hatred before and during the genocide against the Tutsi. The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda tried those responsible in the so-called media trial, concluded in 2003.

The New Times, the daily of record

Published in Kigali in English, The New Times covers politics, business, sport and society. Its editorial line is generally seen as close to government thinking, which makes it a useful source for understanding official positions on any given issue.

Why read in Kinyarwanda?

Almost every Rwandan speaks Kinyarwanda, and the most visited sites write in it: IGIHE, Kigali Today, Umuseke, Umuryango and Inyarwanda. The public daily Imvaho Nshya also targets this readership, particularly in rural districts far from the capital.

A smaller place for French

French remains an official language alongside English and Swahili, but schooling switched to English in 2008. IGIHE runs a French edition, and the French-language Congolese press and the Burundian press also frequently cover Rwandan affairs.

Portals and news websites

IGIHE works as a large general-interest portal, while KT Press, the English arm of the Kigali Today group, and Taarifa Rwanda publish daily on diplomacy and the economy. Rwanda Today, from Kenya's Nation Media group, adds a regional perspective.

RBA, public radio and television

The Rwanda Broadcasting Agency, created in 2013 to succeed ORINFOR, runs Radio Rwanda, Rwanda Television and regional stations such as those in Rubavu and Huye. Many private FM stations also broadcast from Kigali in Kinyarwanda throughout the day.

Agencies and official sources

Government announcements are released through the websites of ministries and the presidency and via RBA. For regional Great Lakes news, dispatches from AFP, Reuters or Xinhua filed in Kigali usefully complement what national outlets report.

Business and sport in Kigali

The economy is followed in the business pages of The New Times and KT Press: tourism, conferences and the Kigali International Financial Centre. Sport is a passion, with Rayon Sports, APR FC, the Tour du Rwanda and the 2025 Road World Cycling Championships.

The diaspora and media abroad

A large diaspora lives in Belgium, France, Canada and the Great Lakes region. Some opinion sites critical of the government are run from abroad, and Kinyarwanda-language programmes from international broadcasters still have listeners inside Rwanda.

Legal framework and press freedom

The Rwanda Media Commission, a self-regulatory body set up in 2013, handles complaints against journalists, while the RURA authority regulates broadcasting. Press freedom groups regularly report self-censorship and prosecutions targeting journalists or YouTubers in the country.

Cross-checking Rwandan sources

Most Rwandan titles are free online. Compare an English-language outlet, a Kinyarwanda site and a regional source such as the East African Kenyan press to separate official messaging, independent analysis and rumours spread on social media.

How to follow Rwandan news from abroad

  1. Read The New Times for official positions and KT Press or Taarifa Rwanda for the day's news in English.
  2. Add IGIHE or Kigali Today, using machine translation if you do not read Kinyarwanda.
  3. Listen to Radio Rwanda live on the RBA website for national bulletins.
  4. Set alerts for Kigali, the Great Lakes or the ministries that interest you.
  5. Compare Rwandan sources with Burundian, Congolese or international outlets on sensitive regional topics.
  6. Check the author and date of every article, especially during the April commemorations.

Questions about Rwandan newspapers

Is there a Rwandan newspaper in French?

There is no longer a major French-language daily in Rwanda. IGIHE does publish a French edition, and some sites post occasional articles in the language. For regular reading, English and Kinyarwanda remain necessary, or a translation tool.

Which Rwandan news site is the most read?

IGIHE is often described as the country's leading news portal, ahead of Kigali Today and Umuseke. These Kinyarwanda sites attract a wide audience with national news, sport and entertainment, while The New Times remains the English-language reference.

How can I listen to Radio Rwanda from abroad?

The Rwanda Broadcasting Agency website streams Radio Rwanda and Rwanda Television live, along with clips from news bulletins. Bulletins are mostly in Kinyarwanda, with editions in English, French and Swahili at certain times of day.

What happened to RTLM and Kangura?

Both outlets ceased to exist after the 1994 genocide. Their founders and presenters were prosecuted before the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha, and several were convicted of direct and public incitement to commit genocide.
